Strawberry Creek Ecological Stabilization Project is seeking three (3) student interns this summer for part-time, paid work.
Pay scale $13-20 per hour, depending on experience. Part-time summer 2013 work includes about 20 hours per week for 8-10 weeks. Some additional work hours may be available during the Fall 2013 semester.
Applications due Monday, May 20, 2013 at 5 pm.
We are looking for an interdisciplinary team of UC Berkeley students (graduate or undergraduate) who will work on a project to develop design plans to stabilize a section of Strawberry Creek on campus. The project will utilize biotechnical approaches to reduce bank erosion and in-stream measures to reduce flow velocities to improve water quality and habitat for native species.
Students will work collaboratively with UC faculty and staff and a creek restoration consultant to produce professional design plans and supporting documentation that will be submitted to regulatory agencies for permitting and to identify funding sources for project implementation grants.
It is anticipated that the project will move into the implementation phase during the summer of 2014. This is contingent upon completion of the construction documents, environmental permits, and procurement of implementation funding. Therefore, it is preferable for at least one student intern to be committed to the project through the implementation phase of the project.
The student team will accomplish all of the following tasks. In your cover letter, please indicate the tasks you would like to work on and provide examples of any relevant experience. You are not expected to have experience or expertise in all categories; other members of the project team (UC faculty and staff and a creek restoration consultant) will provide technical support and mentoring.

  1. Historical and Literature Research - review existing documentation about Strawberry Creek and identify possible data gaps
  2. Topographic survey – develop base map of existing site conditions, including vegetation, structures, and utilities
  3. Geomorphic Assessment – characterize soils and substrate to determine their erosive potential and evaluate current channel form and function
  4. Engineering Design – hydraulic modeling, and engineering analysis to design in-stream and biotechnical bank stabilization measures.
  5. Outreach – develop and maintain blog and Facebook pages, manage press releases, attend campus events
  6. Documentation - develop visual aids for public education purposes, photo-document phases of the project
  7. Grant Writing – apply for funding for the implementation of the project design.

Founded in Fall 2010, Compost Alliance seeks to establish a campus‐wide compost collection system. The Program Coordinator will:

Job Title: Strawberry Creek and Sustainable Water Infrastructure Education Specialist
This position is funded by The Green Initiative Fund.
Background: Strawberry Creek on the UC Berkeley campus provides an excellent outdoor classroom for teaching and learning about natural systems in urban water infrastructure. From its history as a sewer for the campus to its current state as a partially-restored habitat, the creek serves an important role on campus that is relevant to students and visitors alike. While some educational materials about the creek exist, much of it needs to be updated and improved.
ReNUWIt is an NSF-funded engineering research center dedicated to re-inventing urban water infrastructure through research, industry partnerships, and education. For more information, please check out www.urbanwatererc.org.
Job Duties: The Education Specialist's primary duties will be to:

  1. Update, expand, and re-write a self-guided walking tour of Strawberry Creek for publication on the Strawberry Creek website (check out the existing tour at http://strawberrycreek.berkeley.edu/tour/hottourmap.html), including more information about the creek's critical role as part of our urban water infrastructure. New material about sustainable water infrastructure on campus, innovative design features that treat and/or detain runoff, and campus ecological restoration projects that maintain creek water quality as well as provide habitat for native plants and animals on campus should be included in the tour. The new tour will be available online on the Strawberry Creek website (strawberrycreek.berkeley.edu). Tim Pine will also publish the new material in the updated version of the "Strawberry Creek Walking Tour," a printed booklet that will be available in the Berkeley Water Center, for class use, and for campus tours.
  2. Condense the revised self-guided walking tour into short bullet points that will serve as a training manual to augment existing campus tours to include elements about sustainable urban water systems. Tim Pine and Dr. Nelson will disseminate the updated training manual to existing tour guides
  3. Integrate and organize existing documents about Strawberry Creek into a cohesive document of background information about Strawberry Creek.
  4. Collaborate with professors and students in the School of Information who are already interested in making apps that guide visitors on thematic tours of UC Berkeley Campus, to incorporate elements of sustainable urban water systems on these tours.

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills
  • Experience making scientific and environmental issues interesting and accessible to the public
  • Experience with graphic design

Pay Rate: $1000 stipend paid in two increments ($500 at a mid-semester check-in, $500 when project is complete).

Background: Building Sustainability at Cal is a student-run, campus-funded program that works to reduce the environmental impact of campus buildings by educating students in green building topics, project implementation, and professionalism with an ultimate goal of creating a culture of sustainability on campus.
We are searching for a Co-Class Facilitator for the Spring and Fall 2013 semesters (with the option of continuing after that). During the spring semester the hired student will be co-facilitating under the guidance of other experienced student facilitators and will gradually take on more responsibilities as the semester progresses.
The Class Facilitator will:

  • Help with class and building project planning over winter break (from home)
  • Attend both hour-long class sessions each week (TBD, either MW 3-4 or TR 5-6)
  • Regularly meet (or email) with other coordinators to prepare for class

  • Be able to speak confidently and clearly in front of a class of approx. 20 students

Seeking students charged with gathering survey data and overseeing events to assist campus commuters in switching to alternate modes of transportation. The program is as a part of the Campus' new targeted marketing campaign to get people to "break" their driving modes. Description:
These positions will work with the head graduate TDM Project Manager to assist in the effective gathering of baseline information and delivery of marketing and outreach components. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in gathering baseline occupancy information at garages
  • Publicizing and carrying out "Break the Mode" Parking Garage celebrations in October
    • Securing donations, sponsorships and giveaways
    • Distribute outreach and education material—windshield fliers/postcards, stickers, AC Transit brochures, bike maps, emails
    • Setting up and representing "mode stations" (bike/walk, transit, trip linking, carpool, parking alternatives, etc.) to survey participants and provide commute-matching services to campus
    • Gather pledges for trying alternate modes of transportation to campus
    • Event clean-up
  • Follow up with commute pledges
    • Provide personalized commute planning and outreach
    • Provide telephone and email based customer service regarding transportation options to pledgees—which may include trip matching, forming carpools/vanpools, and responding to individual requests
    • Provide weekly written report of communication with pledgees
    • Complete close-out surveys with University Hall Out-Mode pledges, gather input, answer follow-up questions
  • Assist in gathering follow-up occupancy information at garages in November 2012 and February 2013

Qualifications:

Experience with outreaching, marketing and communication initiatives
Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

The Ecology Center invites applicants for the Mark Gorrell Zero Waste Graduate Fellowship for the 2012-2013 academic year. The project of the fellowship will be to research, write, and update the Plastics Task Force Report completed in 1995. Paid Student Internship with Physical Plant – Campus Services to work on a 2011 TGIF Funded Project, Air Handling Unit Transmitters
Physical Plant – Campus Services is seeking a student intern to assist with a pilot project to install Differential Pressure Sensors on Air Handling Units in four buildings on campus.
Background:
Currently the filters in air handling units are changed based on a prefixed schedule and visual inspection performed by Stationary Engineers. However, this is not the most efficient way to manage filter changes because a filter may look dirty but it still has lifecycle remaining that cannot be determined by visual inspection alone. A more efficient and environmentally sustainable method would be to install differential pressure transmitters on air handling units. These transmitters would communicate and notify our Energy Management System when the filters are at the end of their lifecycle. .
Job Description:
The intern will assist with:
Documenting the progress of this project.
Work closely with the Energy Management Group, Preventive Maintenance Group and Utilities Engineering to implement this project.
Assist with scheduling the work in buildings with facility managers and journey-level trades.
Track various types of metrics such as: records from data loggers, reduction in consumption of energy, reduction in filter costs, and labor hours, etc.
Create reports for management to share with the campus community and the scientific community at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Publish metrics and information on an on-going basis about the project's status and findings
Create a project story board for publication at TGIF events.
Qualifications:
Our ideal intern is interested engineering, sustainability and program management. You should have strong communication and people skills, ability to work independently, and as part of a fast-paced and responsive team.

Campus Recycling and Refuse Services (CRRS) coordinates composting, recycling, and landfill streams on campus. In addition to this capacity, CRRS is also home to two student groups- ReUse and the Compost Alliance. CRRS recently received a grant to pay for an intern to redo the department's website, integrating sub-sites for the Compost Alliance and ReUse.

The Education Intern must be comfortable doing a range of team-oriented and independent projects, from supporting logistic planning for program events to helping to edit and compile program best practices for publication.
The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail, want to gain more insight into the energy education field, and be willing to support a mix of administrative and programmatic office work. At least one year of experience with office and administrative tasks preferred, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.  Strong writing and editing skills are also essential for this role, with familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Publisher, website maintenance, and event planning a plus. The right candidate will be a fast learner who can also be trained to take on long-term research and program projects over the year.

Primary Responsibilities:
The Education Intern will be involved in many aspects of the Green Campus and Green Schools programs including:

  • Helping with general office management duties (e.g. tracking and ordering program supplies for day-to-day office needs and program implementation for staff in Oakland and southern California)

Bring Your Own Mug Outreach/Marketing Coordinator
Summary: The campus Environmental Management System (EMS) project for the 2011-2012 year is to launch a BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug) campaign, funded by TGIF. This campaign aims to create a behavior change on campus through education and giveaway / sale of reusable, stainless steel mugs branded with a BYOM logo.
We are looking for an Outreach / Marketing Coordinator that can generate a BYOM buzz on campus. The Coordinator role is critical to the success of the BYOM campaign and will be conducting outreach activities aimed at students, staff and faculty as well as campus cafes. It is expected that the Coordinator use social media as well as more traditional forms of outreach (e.g. tabling, posters, presentations). Salary will be between $10 -15 / hour.

Summer Internships available with Cal Energy Corps- deadline is March 18th
The Cal Energy Corps is offering internships around the world — from Brazil to Germany to Ghana to China, as well as in the Bay Area — during summer 2012.
The internships offer UC Berkeley undergraduates the opportunity to pursue challenging, hands-on projects in energy and climate research, according to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, which announced the summer lineup this week.
Among the projects Cal Energy Corps interns will be involved in are efforts to create "green coal" as industrial fuel, helping to produce biofuels, working on improving photovoltaics for integration into the electricity grid, building models to better understand climate change and designing and testing cook stoves.
The internship program provides a $600 weekly stipend for all interns, as well as funding to cover transportation and housing costs. All placements are full-time. More information and application forms are available at the Cal Energy Corps website.

The Harte Lab at University of California Berkeley is looking for a full-time field assistant to work on one or more ecology projects at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in the summer of 2012. The assistant will work with the Harte Lab to test ecological theory as applied to plant communities and disturbance regimes, and will be trained in field censusing techniques, herbarium work, data management, and laboratory analysis including soil-core carbon measurements. Preference will be given to applicants who either have plant identification skills, or the desire to learn them. Field work involves long hikes at high altitude (9500'), plant counting and identification, and collection, pressing, andorganization of many plant samples. The assistant must be able to carry up to 30 pounds of gear for 4 miles at high altitude, and have a good attitude about early-season biting flies, and late-season monsoonal lightning. Field conditions can be cold, hot, rainy, muddy, overrun by cows, and also very often just simply wonderful.

The primary goal of the HPG team is to retrofit elliptical machines in the RSF to harness human power and generate electricity. Yellowstone Wildlife Field Ecology Instructor
Ecology Project International (EPI) is hiring instructors to teach 7 to 9 day field ecology courses to high school students in Montana, USA. Our programs introduce students to real-world scientific study, raise cultural and ecological awareness, and promote international conservation efforts. Each summer, EPI offers residential ecology courses to U.S. and international student groups from June through August in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Students camp in the Gallatin National Forest while working with the US Forest Service to collect data for various wildlife research projects. During the course, students also spend a few days in the Centennial Valley collecting data for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and working on restoration service projects with The Nature Conservancy. Additionally, they explore Yellowstone National Park and go whitewater rafting.
Qualifications:
Required:

  • Desire to make a difference in the world;
  • Proven field teaching and outdoor leadership experience with young adults;
  • Enthusiasm for leading student groups in remote areas;
  • English fluency;
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, the natural sciences, or related field;

Summer 2012 International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Student Sustainability Fellowship and Exchange*
The 2012 IARU Student Sustainability Fellowship provides one UC Berkeley undergraduate student with the opportunity to work on a campus sustainability project at one of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) member institutions. Projects will be institution-specific, but designed with the intention that lessons learned that can be applied at both the home and the host institution. The student exchange takes place for a six to eight week period between May and August 2012. The exact dates depend on the assigned University. Background: Building Sustainability at Cal is a student-run, campus-funded program that works to reduce the environmental impact of campus buildings by educating students in green building topics, project implementation, and professionalism with an ultimate goal of creating a culture of sustainability on campus.
We are searching for a Co-Class Facilitator for the Spring and Fall 2012 semesters (with the option of continuing after that). We are looking to hire a dependable, self-motivated student with experience in sustainability projects and collaborative work. During the spring semester the hired student will be co-facilitating under the guidance of other experienced student facilitators and will gradually take on more responsibilities as the semester progresses.
The Class Facilitator will:
1. Help with class and building project planning over winter break (from home)

Paid Student Internship with Physical Plant – Campus Services, a 2011 TGIF Funded Project.

Physical Plant – Campus Services is seeking a student intern to assist with a pilot project to install Differential Pressure Sensors on Air Handling Units in four buildings on campus.

Background:
Currently the filters in air handling units are changed based on a prefixed schedule and visual inspection performed by Stationary Engineers. However, this is not the most efficient way to manage filter changes because a filter may look dirty but it still has lifecycle remaining that cannot be determined by visual inspection alone. A more efficient and environmentally sustainable method would be to install differential pressure transmitters on air handling units. These transmitters would communicate and notify our Energy Management System when the filters are at the end of their lifecycle. .
Job Description:
The intern will assist with:
- Documenting the progress of this project.
- Work closely with the Energy Management Group, Preventive Maintenance Group and Utilities Engineering to implement this project.
- Assist with scheduling the work in buildings with facility managers and journey-level trades.
- Track various types of metrics such as: records from data loggers, reduction in consumption of energy, reduction in filter costs, and labor hours, etc.
- Create reports for management to share with the campus community and the scientific community at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
- Publish metrics and information on an on-going basis about the project's status and findings
- Create a project story board for publication at TGIF events.
Qualifications:
Our ideal intern is interested engineering, sustainability and program management. You should have strong communication and people skills, ability to work independently, and as part of a fast-paced and responsive team.

The Campus Bicycle Initiative, a 2011 TGIF Grant Winner, is seeking an Event Outreach Intern. Paid position, from August 1st through September 16th.
Background:
The Campus Bicycle Initiative is a year-long TGIF-funded campaign to get more UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff to commute by bike to campus and around town.

Job Description:
This is a short-term, fairly self-directed position for someone who loves marketing and outreach. The primary responsibility is to create high awareness of the Campus Bicycle Initiative during Welcome Week events and on Campus Bike Day.

Responsibilities:
- Recruit & schedule volunteers to do tabling at Caltopia (8/21-22), Sproul Plaza (8/22-26), Calapalooza (8/25), Urban Outfitters event (9/1), and Campus Bike Day (9/9)
- Figure out most effective ways to encourage people to sign up for workshops, visit BicyCal, participate in Campus Bike Day, and join our mailing list
- Develop training materials & train volunteers
- Arrange logistics of table banner production
- Arrange logistics for tabling – secure table location, make sufficient copies of all handouts, arrange for table/banner/etc. to be there, do set-up and clean-up
- After the events, enter all participant data into a database, send out follow-up communication to participants, and provide summary report

Dining "Real Food" Internship
Under the general direction and supervision of the Assistant Director, Culinary, the student assuming this position will begin work during the summer semester, and will continue through the fall semester researching and assisting in the calculation of Cal Dining's "Real Food" purchases, following the guidelines set forth by RealFood.org. The Real Food Challenge has developed an innovative Real Food Calculator, which provides in-depth definitions of "real food" and a tracking system for institutional purchasing. With this tool, "real food" is broken down into four core categories: local/community-based, fair, ecologically sound, and humane. The student must be willing to begin work with the Real Food Challenge and will attend the Real Food Challenge training summit to be held at UC Davis August 12-14, 2011. Art is often referred to as the "father of energy efficiency." Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on energy efficiency, including cool roofs & appliance standards
  • Write summaries and research papers on topics related to cool roofs, cool pavements, and cool cities
  • Communicate with various stakeholders (government agencies, industry partners, research institutions, and home/building owners)
  • In charge of managing and updating website content (blog, pictures, and written content)
  • Assist in the creation of presentations and talks

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a student enrolled at U.C. Berkeley. Graduate student preferred.
  • Seeking candidates to begin work in Early September 2011
  • Seeking candidates that can work 15 - 20 hours/week mainly during business hours.

Now Hiring - Sustainability Communication Associates
The Office of Sustainability is looking for two UC Berkeley students to serve as Sustainability Communication Associates. The Communication Associates will be part of a team implementing the Talking Louder about Campus Sustainability-The Next Generation campaign, which is funded by a grant from The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF). Associates will help produce the Bright Green Newsletter, press releases, and other communications, as well as develop sustainability website content and host the once-a-semester Student Sustainability Forum. Associates will be trained by an experienced student Communications Associate in event planning, web design, and sustainability program outreach. The Alliance to Save Energy, a nonprofit coalition of business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders who promote the efficient and clean use of energy worldwide, seeks an Education Intern for its Oakland, CA office. The intern will assist the CA Education Team with its California Green Campus and Green Schools Programs. The Green Campus (college-level) and Green Schools (K-12) programs engage students in hands-on projects that save energy in schools, build awareness of the importance of energy efficiency, incorporate energy conservation and efficiency into curriculum through basic changes in the operations and individual behavior, and open pathways to green careers.

Job Description: PLEASE NOTE- This is a work-study position, only work-study students can apply. Under close supervision of the Supervisor of Horticulture and Grounds, incumbent performs a wide variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks including: weeding, mulching, pruning, watering, digging, raking, planting and various tasks as needed involved in the day-to-day maintenance of the living collections.  In addition incumbents may perform various tasks involved in landscape construction projects including clearing brush and trees, bed preparation, road and path work, and rock work.  Tasks may require the use of light trucks and powered tools such as lawn mowers, weedeaters, chippers, and rototillers. Other duties as assigned; training in the preparation, application, and clean-up of compost and compost tea and related equipment.
Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to perform general and strenuous horticultural work on steep, difficult terrain. Good communication skills and reliability. Ability to work independently and in teams. Ability to read, write, follow oral and written instructions. California Drivers License preferred. Ability to lift 75 lbs.

Title: Environmental Management System (EMS) Oversight Committee Seeking Student / ASUC Representatives.
The purpose of the campus EMS, implemented by the department of Environment, Health & Safety, is to identify aspects of UC Berkeley's activities which may have a significant negative impact on the environment. The EMS Oversight Committee evaluates how UC Berkeley's activities impact the environment and what significant environmental changes these impacts cause. The Committee then uses this information to set objectives and targets for continual improvement.

This is an exciting time to serve on the EMS Committee as we will be implementing our BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug) Campaign, recently funded by TGIF. This campaign aims to create a behavior change on campus through education and giveaway / sale of BYOM logo-ed mugs. EMS Committee members will be vital in choosing and testing mugs (stainless steel, leak-proof to-go mugs) as well as crafting the BYOM educational message.
Time Commitment for this committee includes:
- Approximately 2 meetings per semester, including 1 summer meeting.
- 1-2 hours per month, spent evaluating BYOM mugs, performing outreach to campus community on BYOM message and discussing campus environmental impacts via email.

Title: Lawns to Meadows Summer Paid Internship
UC Berkeley Capital Projects is hiring a student to develop outreach and educational tools for the campus TGIF Lawns to Meadows project. The student will work with the Campus Landscape Architect on an initiative to convert selected turf areas to other groundcovers to demonstrate a reduction in water use, labor and fuel and an increase in plant diversity, colors and textures. The Intern will develop educational materials, including signage, plan, print and presentation graphics that will be used to publicize the projects and educate the campus about the project's intent and green features.
Applicants must be enrolled at UC Berkeley, capable of working independently with minimum supervision, and able to collaborate in groups. The minimum work commitment is 40 hours/month.
Skills and Abilities Required:
· Excellent writing, speaking, computer graphics skills.
· Understands landscape design and plan graphics.
· Ability to work independently and to be a self starter.

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) provides funding for projects that reduce UC Berkeley's negative impact on the environment and make UC Berkeley more sustainable. TGIF will allocate funds to projects that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase energy and water efficiency, restore habitat, promote environmental and food justice, and reduce the amount of waste created by UC Berkeley. Portions of the fund also support education and behavior change initiatives, student aid (via return to aid), and internships. TGIF is supported by student fees and administered through a student-majority committee and a program coordinator.
