Project Description: Pedaling Towards Zero Waste will purchase a hybrid human-electric powered Truck Trike to be used by ReUSE, CRRS, and other licensed and trained campus individuals for transportation of reusable materials or during sustainability related projects.

Goals: The overall goal of Pedaling Toward Zero Waste with the Truck Trike is to reduce both the environmental and monetary cost of making UC Berkeley a zero-­‐waste campus by 2020. In line with UC Berkeley's sustainability goals for transportation, energy and climate, and waste, ReUSE is looking to minimize its transportation footprint by utilizing the hybrid human-­‐electric powered Truck Trike instead of campus fleet vehicles. The Truck Trike is an environmentally sound towing vehicle with a modified and customizable rear bed for towing heavy loads, and it would reduce UC Berkeley's carbon footprint while simultaneously diverting material from the campus waste stream.

Train CRRS student staff and ReUSE student volunteers on safety and operating the trike

ReUSE leaders will purchase a bike computer to be mounted on the handlebars to record distance traveled (important metric which will be reported to TGIF)
CRRS and ReUSE students will start using trike to perform deliveries and pickups, and will record distance traveled and weight of cargo (will be reported to TGIF)
Perform ⅓ of bin (recycling, composting, etc) deliveries and ReUSE office supply pickups by trike
Maintain and improve this rate to ½ of all deliveries by trike

Develop educational sign to be attached to exterior of trike flatbed
Outreach to other groups (both student and campus operations) to offer the truck trike as an alternative to fossil-fuel burning modes of transportation (i.e. train a member of the Berkeley Student Food Collective on how to operate the trike, and allow them to borrow the trike for a catering delivery)
Calculate emissions avoided and cost saved at end of semester

2013-2014 Accomplishments

  • The truck-trike was ordered by Campus Recycling and Refuse Services and arrived on campus on November 8th.
  • The "Eco Bike" has now been given a permanent storage space next to the CRRS office in an area that is locked and secure.
  • A meter has been purchased for the Eco Bike. The meter tracks the distances traveled on the bike.
    • This meter will help record metrics for the Eco Bike and calculate the number of gallons of gas saved as a result of using the Bike.
  • The ReUSE Coordinators are working on drafting a protocol that will allow them to train the rest of the CRRS office on how to use the Bike.
  • The ReUSE Coordinators created a comprehensive guide for travel routes, as they are using the Eco Bike for refilling reuse stations and building pick-ups.


Next Steps:
  • Finish writing protocol for using the Eco Bike. 
  • Train all CRRS staff to use the Bike.
  • Train members of the ReUSE student organization.
  • Create signage to place on Eco Bike for conveying the Biks' goals.
  • All Bike riders will calculate the following information for the recording of metrics:
    • Date Used
    • Total Number of Miles Traveled
    • Gallons of Gas Saved (TNM/MPG of the Dodge Truck that was used prior to Bike purchase)
    • Weight of Materials Carried by Bike
    • Total Gallons saved to date
    • Total Weight to Date

Mission Statement

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) provides funding for projects that reduce UC Berkeley's negative impact on the environment and make UC Berkeley more sustainable. TGIF will allocate funds to projects that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase energy and water efficiency, restore habitat, promote environmental and food justice, and reduce the amount of waste created by UC Berkeley. Portions of the fund also support education and behavior change initiatives, student aid (via return to aid), and internships. TGIF is supported by student fees and administered through a student-majority committee and a program coordinator.
