Project Description: TLC will host a series of training and mentoring experiences for students and staff on a wide variety of sustainability topics, with the intention of building a campus culture of sustainability through career training and development opportunities. These will include job shadowing for student and staff, a student multi-media communications project, staff sustainability training, and three paid student internships within the Office of Sustainability.

Goals: Train up to 100 participants to evaluate and/or implement both infrastructure and behavioral or programmatic improvements related to state-of-the-art sustainability practices. Provide students and staff with opportunities to shadow a sustainability professional in their work. Produce several well-designed and enjoyable video and audio communication pieces that promote campus sustainability. Provide an in-depth training for up to 20 staff in campus sustainability practices and certify these staff as "green employees". Hire three student interns to fill positions such as "The Research & Special Projects Associate", "The Climate Action Associate", and "The Outreach & Event Associate". Support these student interns as they work on sustainability reports and projects, a ten-source greenhouse gas emissions survey, and event planning of sustainability forums. Assist the campus in reaching the goals set forth by CalCAP, CACS, and UCOP's Policies on Sustainable Practices. Increase readership of the Office of Sustainability's Bright Green News.

2010-2011 Accomplishments:

  • From July to May, TLC issued 8 editions of Bright Green News and expanded its subscribers from 1,400 to 2,000 – a 43% increase in readership.
  • Student Sustainability Forums were held during at the beginning of both the fall and spring semesters. The spring forum was videotaped and posted to the Office of Sustainability's YouTube Channel.
  • TLC interns created YouTube Video, entitled "UC Bee Sustainable", during which TinkerBee leads us on a sustainability tour of UC Berkeley.
  • Seven students have held paid internships with the Office of Sustainability- Meet the Interns! (pg. 5 of the newsletter)
  • The number Certified Green Events grew from 34 to 57 from the end of fall semester to May, with 82% of these 57 events offering composting, and an estimated 80% serving a minimum of 10% sustainable food. Approximately 19,300 people attended these certified events.

Next Steps: Originally slated to complete by June 2011, TLC will continue in 2012 having only expended an estimated 1/3 of its grant award. The Office of Sustainability will continue to employ paid student interns, who will complete an additional two multimedia projects for TLC. The interns will also contribute to the 2011 Campus Sustainability Report and help the Office launch its WORKbright green Staff Sustainability Trainings.

2011-2012 Accomplishments

  • The UC Bee Sustainable YouTube Video reached 564 views as of July 18, 2012.
  • TLC Interns created a new YouTube Video entitled "How Do You Get Around Berkeley?", which has 237 views as of July 18, 2012.
  • Interns Michelle Lowe and Jessica Schoefer created the UCB sustainable fashion blog and photo display, entitled LoopCycle, which was launched in January 2012.
  • Intern Taylor Zhou provided analysis for campus energy savings on printing equipment for an OE initiative and continued a building GHG assessment as part of the CalCAP program; Taylor also provided assistance on Renewable Energy Certificate recommendations.
  • Intern Joanna Young continued to produce the Bright Green News, coordinated the recruitment process and trainings for the Next Generation of communications associates, and updated the Office of Sustainability's green event certification materials.
  • Intern Kaya Allan Sugerman researched and completed the 2011 Sustainability Report, serving as its primary author. Kaya also spearheaded the WORKbright green Staff Sustainability Training, by designing the training, developing the curriculum, marketing the training, securing 19 participants, and successfully running the trainings through November and December.

Year-End Report

Next Steps:
The Office of Sustainability has received TGIF approval to extend the project through December 2012 in order to offer a fall 2012 Staff Sustainability Training coordinated by a student intern and provide students with the opportunity to work on new CalCAP related projects, including a new coalition effort with the City of Berkeley and multiple non-profits interested in advancing energy efficiency in the community. It is anticipated that the extension of the project and use of the funds for fall staff training will offer another 20 to 25 employees an opportunity to learn about campus sustainability efforts. There will be an effort made to attract participants to the training that are new to sustainability, thus helping to expand the environmental community. Additionally, CalCAP will be very active in the upcoming year and these funds will help to further expand student input and involvement in these important activities, while offering the students valuable work experience.

2012-2013 Accomplishments
The Office of Sustainability held a second WORKbright green Staff Sustainability Training funded by TGIF during the fall semester. The training took place over the course of two 4-hour sessions featuring presentations and workshops from various campus staff and student environmental groups. 
Twenty participating staff learned sustainability competencies in:

  • Campus transportation options - making more environmentally friendly business and commute travel choices.
  • Creating less waste - methods to reduce, re-use, recycle, and compost.
  • Energy efficiency, conservation, and reductions in electricity use - best practices in the workplace.
  • Campus land use/stewardship and greening campus buildings.
  • Using less water - ways to reduce campus domestic use.
  • Green purchasing - making sustainable buying decisions at work.
  • Student-led sustainability initiatives - ways for staff and students to work together to green campus operations.
  • Money - grants and funding available to staff for green campus initiatives.

The Office of Sustainability also hired a graduate student intern, who worked on the remaining aspects of the climate and energy research projects. The intern examined campus steam related emissions and protocols.

Final Results
1) The Cal Climate Action Partnership (CalCAP) is a collaboration of faculty, administration, staff, and students working to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at UC Berkeley. TGIF's Internships supported CalCAP's work by:

  • Evaluating How to Best Save Energy in Your Office and in Building Common Areas. One fact Taylor Zhou, intern, revealed in her research – If you turn off a hallway light at night that doesn't need to be on for safety, you can save over 6,000 kWh a year of electricity.
  • Developing UC Berkeley Guidelines for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Carbon Offsets. The campus may need to acquire RECs or offsets to meet the 2014 greenhouse gas emissions target - Research intern Taylor Zhou worked with CalCAP to prepare an initial evaluation of related products and guidelines.
  • Assessing the Costs and Benefits of infrastructure and behavioral projects to reduce campus climate impacts. Evaluating projects for cost-effectiveness is cornerstone to CalCAP's greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy - Research intern Joanna Young updated this analysis for the campus.
  • Evaluating the protocol used to determine greenhouse gas emissions from campus steam. Civil Engineering graduate student Laurel Dunn reviewed various protocols for evaluating emissions related to steam generated from a cogeneration facility. Her research will lead the campus to adopting a newer more accurate method for reporting campus steam related emissions. 

2) Two WORKbright green Staff Sustainability Trainings were held, one in fall 2011 and one in fall 2012 with forty campus staff from varying departments and job roles participating. The free 7.5 hour training equipped staff with tools to make informed choices to improve sustainability in the workplace, bring green projects back to the office, and collaborate with other campus sustainability stewards.

A session on WORKbright green was presented at the 2012 California Higher Education Sustainability Conference.

3) The 2011 Campus Sustainability Report highlighted sustainability metrics, features campus projects, and includes a new feature - "Sustainability Snapshots." These information-filled graphics provide a succinct summary of current progress toward sustainability goals, and their design and creation was done by student intern Kaya Allan Sugerman. Kaya also served as the primary author of the 2011 report. 

4) The student team produced visual content for the web to promote campus sustainability. Three high-quality multi-media pieces are posted on the Office of Sustainability website.

Final Report

Mission Statement

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) provides funding for projects that reduce UC Berkeley's negative impact on the environment and make UC Berkeley more sustainable. TGIF will allocate funds to projects that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase energy and water efficiency, restore habitat, promote environmental and food justice, and reduce the amount of waste created by UC Berkeley. Portions of the fund also support education and behavior change initiatives, student aid (via return to aid), and internships. TGIF is supported by student fees and administered through a student-majority committee and a program coordinator.
