Project Description: SERC and Chinook Book have teamed up to create a sustainable living and educational mobile app that is available for FREE to all UC Berkeley students, staff, and faculty. The app provides resources and discounts: events, jobs, links to sustainability organizations, and over 200 mobile coupons from sustainable local merchants.

  1. Customize the existing Chinook Book app to a SERC special edition app. Create and upload UC Berkeley sustainability and student-focused educational content for the app.
  2. Provide single-use mobile discounts redeemable at over 200 local green businesses, businesses that meet Chinook Book's criteria.
  3. Use the app as a communication tool for SERC's community publicity efforts.
  4. Secure 5,000 UC Berkeley app users.
  5. Track the number of app downloads, mobile sessions, views & impressions of educational content, mobile coupon redemptions, "favorites" at participating businesses, and the amount of money the app steers towards the local sustainable economy.

2014 Accomplishments

  • Designed and launched SERC Chinook Book Landing page.
    • Asked Chinook Book to change the order/layout of the first landing page on the app to better highlight UC Berkeley content.
  • Content:
    • Launched new 2014-2015 app coupons on September 1, 2014
    • Wrote and uploaded 7 content articles for the app
  • Advertising:
    • Designed and printed Mobile App promotional cards (1,000 count) and 2 posters.
      • Distributed promotional cards at Calapalooza and at all fall 2014 SERC Events (20+)
    • Tabled at Earth Day 2014 and distributed App Promotional cards at 30 Earth Week events
    • Advertised the Mobile App through the UC Berkeley News Center article “Holiday Gifts with a Berkeley Twist
  • Met with students Pallavi Sherikar (CRRS) and Kielan Rathken (STeam) who wanted to develop a campus sustainability app. Told them about the existing SERC Mobile App and they have agreed to utilize this existing app rather than develop a new duplicate app. Pallavi and Kielan are working with their student team to develop a proposal for SERC on how to improve the content on the app. Proposal will be submitted to SERC after the 2014 winter break.
  • Brainstormed new marketing tactics:
    • Coordinate with student services to deploy an email to all students.
    • Coordinate with housing services to reach student upon moving in.  Sometimes there is a welcome pack of info other times we put cards in mailboxes or slide under the doors
    • Coordinate with dining services to distribute cards or hang posters in dining areas.
    • Work with other sustainability groups to give them the tools promote this to their members.  This can be email templates, list serve content, or promo cards for their meetings.
    • Work with local property managers to distribute cards to apartment tenants - again cards under the door or in mailboxes
    • Work with local merchant to distribute cards or hang signage.
    • Reach out to student newspaper (Daily Cal) to either have them do a story or sometimes student groups are entitled to comp ad space.
    • On campus signage - posters in key places have performed decently.
    • Work with faculty services to spread the word to faculty and staff as an HR benefit - we've even done an insert in paychecks.

Mission Statement

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) provides funding for projects that reduce UC Berkeley's negative impact on the environment and make UC Berkeley more sustainable. TGIF will allocate funds to projects that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase energy and water efficiency, restore habitat, promote environmental and food justice, and reduce the amount of waste created by UC Berkeley. Portions of the fund also support education and behavior change initiatives, student aid (via return to aid), and internships. TGIF is supported by student fees and administered through a student-majority committee and a program coordinator.
