On Thursday October 24, 2013, the Cal Dining Sustainability Team hosted Food Day at UC Berkeley. Food Day is a nationwide event celebrating healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food. This year’s UC Berkeley Food Day featured free food, live music, local food vendors and educators, student group activities, food preparation demos, prizes, give-aways, and more!
Although the team had difficulty coordinating the vendors, the event was ultimately successful. There were delicious pear samples from Frog Hollow Farms, drink samples from KeVita Probiotic Drinks and Purity Organic, and cookie samples from the Berkeley Student Food Collective (BSFC).
There were also displays of mushrooms from Back to the Roots, coffee from the Ubuntu Coffee Collective (which is open to the public for tastings Saturday 10-2) and food and products for sale from The Local and BSFC.
The ASUC Sustainability Team (STEAM), BSFC, Student Organic Garden Assiciation (SOGA), Student Diabetic Association (SDA), and other student groups educated students on various sustainable food information. The BSFC was particularly active, and Sarah Atkinson, head of CalDining Sustainability Team, said that “our decision to team up with the BSFC was very successful, especially since they actually bring sustainable products to campus and are often more accessible to students than the vendors.” Keep an eye out for future events by the CalDining Sustainability Team!
